With our fabric printing service we have a range of polyester fabrics, but have you ever wondered exactly what polyester is? Polyester fabric is a type of textile that is made from polyester fibres. In essence these are fibres made from a type of plastic that are then spun into yarns and woven or knitted to create various types of fabrics. For a very technical explanation these fibres are derived from the polymerization of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) or its dimethyl ester dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with monoethylene glycol (MEG).

Polyester fabric is known for several characteristics that make it popular in the textile industry:

Durability: Polyester is a durable material, making it resistant to wear and tear. This characteristic contributes to the longevity of products made from polyester fabric.

Wrinkle Resistance: Polyester fibres are inherently resistant to wrinkles, which means that clothing and other items made from polyester tend to maintain a smooth and neat appearance.

Quick Drying: Polyester has a low level of moisture absorption, allowing it to dry quickly. This makes polyester fabric a suitable choice for sportswear and outdoor clothing.

Resistance to Mildew and Moths: Polyester is less susceptible to mildew and attacks by moths compared to natural fibres like cotton or wool.

Colour Retention: Polyester fabrics often have good colour retention, meaning they can maintain their vibrant colours even after multiple washes.

Versatility: Polyester can be blended with other fibres to create fabrics with a combination of properties. For example, polyester-cotton blends offer a balance between the comfort of cotton and the durability of polyester.

Polyester fabric is widely used in the textile industry and fabric printing as a whole. It's used in the production of clothing, home textiles (such as bed linens and curtains), upholstery, industrial fabrics, and various other applications due to its versatility and favourable characteristics.
